Heap of more than 50 empty liquor bottles found at Raigad Fort

  • Shameful incident for Chhatrapati’s Maharashtra

  • Tourists found holding drunken parties at the fort

Mahad (Maharashtra) – It has come to light that tourists have been holding drunken parties at Raigad Fort. More than 50 empty bottles of liquor were found piled up in the fort area. Fort lovers, local citizens and followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj expressed anger over the incident. Along with liquor bottles, plastic waste and large-scale uncleanliness were also seen.

Followers of Shivaji Maharaj have alleged that such incidents occur because tourists and their belongings are not thoroughly checked at the main entry gates of the fort. The followers and locals have demanded that every tourist visiting the fort should undergo strict checking at the entrance gates, the number of security guards at the fort should be increased immediately, CCTV cameras should be installed in the fort premises and behind major historical structures, prohibition notices against liquor should be displayed prominently, and strict action should be taken against violators by registering criminal cases against them.

Some incidents from the past two years showing misconduct at forts in Maharashtra

December 2025: Liquor bottles were seized from a four-wheeler heading towards Sinhagad Fort.

October 2025: Some people were found consuming liquor near Raireshwar Fort in Bhor (Pune District).

July 2024: Large-scale protests were held after huge amounts of garbage were found at Vishalgad Fort.

Editorial Perspective

  • Incidents highlighting the deteriorating condition of the forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj repeatedly come to light. This can only be seen as an example of the neglect shown by the Archaeology Department towards these forts under its jurisdiction. The Government must now fix responsibility for this incident and take action against the concerned officials!
  • Tourists who desecrate forts should themselves be punished by being made to clean the forts!
