Mahfuz Alam arrested in Uttar Pradesh for illegal transactions worth thousands of crores of rupees

A Trinamool Congress leader in Bengal had given him shelter

Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) – Police arrested Mahfuz Alam, the mastermind of a gang that carried out illegal transactions worth ₹1,600 crore through 68 bank accounts. Since February, he had fled to Kolkata, where a Trinamool Congress leader had given him shelter. However, after the Trinamool Congress was defeated in the Bengal elections, Alam came to Kanpur city with the help of some intermediaries in an attempt to negotiate a “settlement.” The police arrested him there. Earlier, on 4 May, the police had arrested Mahfuz’s brother-in-law Mahtab and his son Masoom. With the arrest of the main conspirator Mahfuz, more links connected to this major financial scam are expected to emerge.

How the case came to light ?

On 16 February, Wasid from Yashodanagar and his associate Arshad filed a complaint claiming that “an unidentified person robbed us of ₹8 lakh at gunpoint.” However, when the police began investigating, both later stated that no robbery had taken place. Their repeatedly changing statements raised police suspicion. The investigation revealed that both were working for scrap businessman Mahfuz Alam (alias Pappu Suriwala) from Jajmau.

On that day, acting on Mahfuz’s instructions, ₹3.20 crore had been withdrawn from IDBI Bank in the name of “Shivansh Tannery.” Out of this amount, ₹2.95 crore was distributed among Mahfuz’s son Faiz, brother-in-law Mahtab, and other relatives, while the remaining ₹25 lakh was being taken to Mahfuz’s house. The police investigation found that Mahfuz, his family members, and relatives had opened a total of 68 bank accounts across 12 banks. Transactions worth ₹1,600 crore had taken place through these accounts over the past two years and three months.
