Iran takes a swipe at Pakistan over mediation claims : “If Pakistan wishes, we can mediate between it and Afghanistan !”

Tehran (Iran) – In a pointed remark aimed at Pakistan, which has been projecting itself as a mediator in the Iran–United States tensions, Iran stated that it is ready to mediate in Pakistan’s ongoing conflict with Afghanistan if Islamabad so desires.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that if both countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan) are willing, Iran is prepared to help resolve their differences. Turning Pakistan’s own language against it, Araghchi remarked that dialogue and regional cooperation are the only way to resolve any issue. He added that both countries should adopt diplomatic means to prevent escalation of tensions.

Pakistan–Afghanistan relations deteriorate

After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have increased. Pakistan had intended to use the Taliban as a strategic tool against India; however, instead of falling into Pakistan’s influence, the Taliban began pursuing an independent policy. This led to a strain in relations between the two.

Pakistan has accused the Afghan government (Taliban) of providing shelter to terrorists belonging to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an organisation active against Pakistan. Using this as a basis, Pakistan has repeatedly carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan. This has resulted in hostility between Pakistan and the Taliban-led regime, with frequent border clashes occurring between the two sides.
