Tehran (Iran): The 15-day ceasefire between Iran and the United States is set to expire on April 22nd. Prior to this, a round of talks held in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, aimed at establishing a permanent cessation of hostilities had failed. A second round of discussions was scheduled for April 22nd; however, Iran has reportedly refused to participate, according to local Iranian media.
Why did Iran refuse the talks ?
Iran’s official news agency stated that the decision to abstain from the talks stems from the United States’ unrealistic demands, shifting positions, repeated contradictions, and the ongoing naval blockade. Iran has made it clear that as long as this blockade continues, normal maritime movement will not be permitted.
Senior Iranian official Ebrahim Zolfaghari announced that Iran has formally rejected all negotiations with the United States. He further stated that the peace agreement now stands nullified, and the Strait of Hormuz; a strategically vital narrow waterway connecting major bodies of water; has been completely closed once again.
Meanwhile, the United States has confirmed that its delegation will still attend the scheduled meeting.
“Sign the deal or face total destruction” – Trump issues fresh warningFormer U.S. President Donald Trump described the proposed talks as Iran’s final opportunity to agree to a deal. He warned that if Iran refuses to sign, “the entire country will be destroyed,” adding that critical infrastructure such as power plants, bridges, and other facilities could be targeted. |
US Navy seizes Iranian cargo vesselThe US Navy has taken control of an Iranian cargo ship named Tuska in the Gulf of Oman. The action was reportedly taken after the vessel attempted to breach the naval blockade imposed around Iran. U.S. forces adopted an aggressive stance to intercept the ship. Donald Trump confirmed the incident, stating on social media that Iranian crew members ignored repeated warnings. As a result, US naval forces disabled the vessel by targeting its engine room, bringing it to a halt. The ship and its crew are currently under US custody. The Tuska, approximately 900 feet long and comparable in weight to an aircraft carrier, had previously been under US sanctions due to alleged illegal activities. |
