Rickshaw drivers in Maharashtra who do not know Marathi will have their licenses revoked

  • A commendable decision by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik !

  • Order to be implemented from 1 May

Mumbai – The Maharashtra Government has initiated a major crackdown on auto-rickshaw permits, with strict action likely against drivers who do not know Marathi. The move comes after rising complaints about irregularities in licence issuance, particularly in the Mira-Bhayandar region.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed authorities to conduct a thorough re-examination of rickshaw licences. Officials have been asked to submit a detailed report by 1 May 2026. The verification will check documents as well as compliance with existing rules, including language requirements.

Marathi Language Made Mandatory

As per transport department norms, knowledge of Marathi is compulsory for rickshaw drivers in the state. During the re-verification process, officials will specifically assess whether drivers can communicate in Marathi with passengers. Drivers found failing this requirement may face cancellation of their licences.

Editorial Perspective

Rickshaw drivers must now learn the Marathi language. Such a decision should be taken across the entire state to enforce Marathi everywhere. Only then will the Marathi language truly be revived.
