CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim’s objectionable support for violence in Malda !

MCP leader Mahammad Salim

Kolkata (Bengal) – Senior CPI(M) leader Mohammed Salim has supported the incident of gherao and violence against judicial officers in Malda. He stated that when injustice itself becomes law, protest remains the only option.

Salim said that this incident is the result of the failure of both the Union Government and the State Government, particularly due to anger among people over the issue of deletion of names from the voter list. He claimed that when voting rights are affected, such protests become inevitable.

He further alleged that the controversial voter list revision process is a campaign against the poor, minorities, and deprived sections. According to him, many names were removed without clear reasons, affecting various sections of society.

What had happened ?

On 1 April, in the Mothabari area of Malda, seven judicial officers who had gone there following orders of the Supreme Court were gheraoed and held hostage inside the BDO office. One officer was also confined inside a vehicle for nearly 9 hours. During this time, the protesting mob blocked roads, vandalised property, and attacked the police. So far, more than 35 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Editorial Perspective

The history of the Communist movement, including CPI(M), has been marked by violence not only in India but across the world. Therefore, it is hardly surprising that such a party would support violent actions. A serious consideration is now required on whether such organisations should be banned in India.
