Dhaka (Bangladesh) – About a year and a half ago, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had to step down in Bangladesh. Following that, relations between India and Bangladesh had become strained. Now, with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party coming to power, relations between the two countries are improving. The eight stalled bilateral projects are now gaining momentum again.
After Tarique Rahman came to power, visa services for Indians were resumed. Since 20 February, these services have restarted at all consulates, including in Delhi. Efforts are underway to restart the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline project by the end of 2026. Through this pipeline, diesel was being supplied from India’s Numaligarh refinery to Parbatipur in Bangladesh. This supply had been halted after the political changes that took place on 5 August 2024.
Improvements between the two countries in the last two months
After the new Government came to power, several meetings have been held at the foreign ministry level between the two nations. Continuous communication is being maintained between India’s High Commissioner and Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister. Both countries are focusing on building mutual trust. Agreements related to transport, railways and information technology have also been reactivated.
