Incident at Varanasi airport

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) – During a routine security check at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, a young woman scheduled to board an Indigo Airlines flight from Varanasi to Mumbai was found wearing a black burqa. Upon verification by female security personnel, her Aadhaar card identified her as Pooja Kushwaha, which raised suspicion. She was subsequently detained for questioning. Initial inquiries revealed that she was in a relationship with a Muslim youth and was attempting to travel discreetly, allegedly, to marry him.

Sequence of events
1. The woman is originally from Gopalganj, Bihar, while her family resides in Mumbai. She developed a relationship with a Muslim youth named Siraj from her neighbourhood. When her family learned of this, they opposed the relationship and took her to Gopalganj. According to reports, her family was preparing to arrange her marriage within their community.
2. Siraj reportedly sent his relative, Imran, to bring her back from Gopalganj and arranged flight tickets for both. To avoid her personal identity during the journey, she wore a burqa. She arrived at Varanasi airport with Imran, where both were taken into custody by the police.
3. Upon learning about the incident, members of the Bajrang Dal visited the police station for details. The police facilitated a discussion between the woman and the activists, during which she stated that she was acting of her own free will. Police officer Atul Singh confirmed that her family has been informed.
