Court verdict in the ‘Mainather’ case in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh

Moradabad (UP) – In the ‘Mainather’ case that occurred in 2011, a court in Moradabad has sentenced 16 Muslims to life imprisonment after finding them guilty. About 15 years ago, a Muslim mob attacked a Police team that had gone to arrest an accused in a molestation case. Following the attack, the mob set a Police outpost on fire. At that time, the then Deputy Inspector General of Police was also seriously injured.

A total of 19 Muslim accused were involved in this case. Out of them, 3 have died. The remaining 16 have now been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court. Those convicted include Manzoor Ahmad, Mohammad Ali, Hashim, Mohammad Kamrul, Mohammad Mujif, Mohammad Yunus, Rizwan, Shahpur Chamran, Jane Alam, Nazim, Parvez Alam, Firoz, and 4 others. All of them are residents of the Mainather area. Out of these, 14 were already in jail, while 2 who had absconded were recently arrested by the Police. During the investigation, Police identified 34 individuals, out of which charge sheets were filed against 25 people, including 6 minors.

What was the case ?

On 6 July 2011, in Asalatpur Bagha village of the Mainather area in Moradabad, Police had gone to arrest an accused in a molestation case. Initially, Muslim women surrounded the Police to prevent the arrest. Subsequently, a rumour was spread that the Police had disrespected a religious text (the Quran). Following this rumour, a mob set the Dingerpur Police outpost and Police vehicles on fire. When senior officers reached the spot after receiving information, they were also attacked by the mob.
