Violence Resumes Near Pakistan–Afghanistan Border: 2 Civilians Killed

Three Pakistani military posts reportedly destroyed

Kabul (Afghanistan) — Fresh violence has erupted along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border following the end of a temporary ceasefire. At least two civilians were killed and several others injured in firing that took place on March 25. According to Afghan officials, the clashes occurred in the Narai and Sarkano districts of Kunar province, where Pakistan allegedly carried out heavy shelling.

1. Afghan border forces retaliated and claimed to have destroyed three Pakistani military posts. They also stated that one person was killed in the action; however, these claims have not been independently verified. Pakistan, on the other hand, has accused Afghan forces of initiating the firing.

2. Both countries had earlier announced a temporary ceasefire during the period of Ramadan. Prior to this, at the request of Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Qatar, both sides had agreed to halt hostilities. The agreement came after Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghanistan.

3. The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has announced the resumption of attacks within Pakistan. The group is believed to be an ally of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the intensity of attacks in Pakistan has increased. Pakistan has alleged that Afghanistan is allowing its territory to be used for terrorist activities, a claim denied by the Afghan government.
