Inmates found consuming narcotic substances

  • Shocking Condition of Prisons in Karnataka

  • The highest number of users was found among female inmates

Bengaluru (Karnataka) — Medical examinations of inmates are currently being conducted in prisons across all districts of Karnataka. During these checks, it has been revealed that many inmates have been consuming narcotic substances. Notably, a significant number of female inmates are involved in drug use.

At present, inmates identified as drug users are being kept in separate cells and are undergoing treatment. To determine the exact level of addiction, various samples from the inmates have been sent to laboratories for analysis. Further treatment will be administered based on the severity of addiction once the reports are received.

Higher drug use among under-trial inmates

Urine tests have revealed that the number of under-trial inmates (those whose cases are still pending) consuming narcotics is higher than that of convicted prisoners. Instances of manipulation by female inmates have also come to light, including cases where urine samples were diluted with water. Doctors are now conducting tests with heightened vigilance.

The exact number of inmates consuming narcotics is still unclear. So far, only about 10 per cent of inmates have been tested, and examinations of the remaining inmates are ongoing.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Following this revelation, there is public concern over whether prison staff in Karnataka should also be investigated for possible involvement or negligence regarding narcotics use.
  • If such is the condition inside prisons, it raises serious questions about how easily drugs might be available outside and how widespread their consumption could be.
