New Delhi — It has emerged that U.S. fighter aircraft carried out airstrikes on military bases located on a mountain near the Chabahar Free Trade Zone. The Chabahar Free Trade Zone is located in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, near the Pakistan border.

Geopolitical and Geo-Economic Importance of Chabahar Port

1. The Chabahar Free Trade Zone connects Central Asia with the Indian Ocean.

2. The Chabahar Free Trade Zone was established in 1992.

3. Since the area is situated along the coast of the Gulf of Oman, Iran does not have to rely on the Strait of Hormuz route to access the Indian Ocean.

1. In 2021, India pledged to invest billions of dollars to develop industries in the Chabahar Free Trade Zone.

4. In 2024, India signed a 10-year agreement with Iran. Under this agreement, India’s India Ports Global Limited committed to invest 370 million dollars (approximately ₹3,500 crore) in Chabahar.
