Countries such as China, France, Japan, South Korea and Britain, which have been affected by disruptions to this vital sea route, may also deploy their warships to the region. Trump expressed hope that with the cooperation of these countries, the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened.

Trump further said that the United States has destroyed Iran’s military capability by 100 percent; however, Iran may still attempt to disrupt the Strait using drones or short-range missiles. He added that the United States will reopen the Strait of Hormuz under any circumstances and that military action will be taken if necessary to achieve this objective.

A senior Iranian military official stated that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and that it is under Iran’s control. Commander of the naval wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Alireza Tangsiri, said that the claims made by the United States are incorrect. The United States claims that it has destroyed Iran’s navy and can ensure safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz; however, this claim too is untrue.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, but it is closed only to vessels belonging to Iran’s enemies – the United States and Israel. There are no restrictions on maritime traffic for other countries. When asked about the blockade in the strait, Araghchi said that the step was taken for security reasons.

Netanyahu’s office later clarified that the Prime Minister is completely safe and that such reports are false.
