  • One Muslim man was arrested for setting a vehicle on fire

Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh): In March 2026, police in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly torching a vehicle belonging to a member of the Hindu community as part of a “task” received via the Telegram messaging app. The suspect, identified as Abuzar Shamim Rain, was reportedly promised payment in exchange for filming the act and sending it to his handlers. Abuzar was arrested on 12 March 2026, under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relates to acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India. On the night of 4 March 2026, the suspect allegedly used petrol to set fire to a Mahindra pickup truck parked in front of a temple in the Kiratpur area. The vehicle reportedly had Hindu religious symbols and slogans on it, which the suspect also attempted to deface.

According to the reports, Abuzar told the police that he was facing financial distress and sought help from a relative, Mohd Zaid, based in Mumbai. Zaid allegedly introduced him via Telegram to a handler named “Abu Bakar,” who instructed him to target vehicles with religious symbols and record the act to receive payment.
Police recovered a mobile phone from the suspect containing digital video evidence of the arson. The suspect admitted to filming the burning vehicle as “proof of his crime” to claim the promised reward, though he claimed he had not yet received the money.

Authorities are currently investigating a potential larger online network or conspiracy aimed at triggering communal unrest. Police teams have been dispatched to Mumbai to apprehend the alleged associates, Zaid and Abu Bakar. The Bijnor Police utilised CCTV footage and digital forensics to identify and track the suspect after the vehicle owner filed a formal complaint. Investigators stated the suspect appeared to be preparing for further, larger incidents before his arrest.
