1.5 L kg of expired food products from Amul destroyed

  • FSSAI action to destroy the stock continued for 4 days

  • Attempt was being made to change the “expiry date” and sell the products again in the market

Jaipur (Rajasthan) – About 1,50,000 kilograms of expired food products belonging to Amul were seized and destroyed in Jaipur. Officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) carried out the operation and destroyed the large stock. It took four days to dispose of the entire consignment, which filled 27 truckloads. The action was taken after a raid on a warehouse in the Kho Nagorian locality of Jaipur. During the investigation, the department received information that large quantities of expired food products had been stored and preparations were underway to erase the original expiry dates and print new ones before selling them in the market.

During the inspection, officials found around 12,000 cartons of expired products. Out of these, about 3,000 cartons contained packets where the expiry dates had already been erased. Authorities also seized thinner, acetone, and other chemicals from the warehouse. These chemicals are suspected to have been used to remove the old printed dates from the packaging.

Editorial Perspectives

  • It is unlikely that the owners or senior officials of the Amul establishment were unaware that such a large quantity of unfit food was about to be sold to the public. Therefore, the government should take the strictest legal action against those responsible.
  • The question arises: if such incidents occur, people may begin to suspect that similar practices are common across many companies. In that case, who should be held accountable — the companies, the system, or someone else?
