Gulfam, attacker who carried out the fatal assault on Saleem Wastik, killed in police encounter

Laxmanpuri (Uttar Pradesh) – Gulfam, the second accused who carried out a deadly attack with a paper cutter on Saleem Wastik, a vocal critic of fallacies in Islam, was killed in a police encounter on the night of 3rd March. The accused, on whom a reward of ₹1 lakh had been announced, had an encounter with teams of the Crime Branch and the Indirapuram Police Station. Two policemen were injured in the exchange of fire. A few days earlier, Gulfam’s brother Zeeshan, who was also involved in the attack on Wastik, had been killed in a police encounter.

1.  According to the police, both brothers Gulfam and Zeeshan were involved in the attack on Saleem Wastik on 27th February. After the incident, some videos of the two riding away on a motorcycle had surfaced.

2.  Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had expressed displeasure over the attack and warned that “the attackers will not be spared”. Following this, the police took swift action and both accused were killed in encounters.

3.  Based on CCTV footage, the police had identified both the accused. After this, a reward of ₹1 lakh each was announced for Gulfam and Zeeshan.

4.  On 1st March, when the younger brother Zeeshan was killed in an encounter at Lohani, the elder brother Gulfam escaped by taking advantage of the darkness. Since then, the police had been searching for him.

5.  Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Piyush Kumar said that after the killing of Zeeshan, the search for Gulfam continued and information was received that he was within the jurisdiction of Indirapuram Police Station. At 9:15 p.m., Gulfam was seen arriving with his accomplice near the power station at Vasundhara. When the police asked him to stop, he tried to turn the motorcycle around and flee, but the motorcycle skidded. After that, the accused opened fire at the police.

6.  Head constables Pushpendra Kumar Shukla and Sandeep Kumar were injured in the firing. In retaliation, the police opened fire and Gulfam was shot in the chest.

7.  The Crime Branch has scrutinised the social media accounts of Zeeshan, who was killed in an encounter two days ago, and many videos related to terrorist ideology posted there are being examined.
