New Delhi – Kazakhstan, the world’s largest uranium producer, has signed an agreement with India. It will supply uranium fuel for nuclear power plants in India, Kazakhstan’s state-owned uranium company Kazatomprom announced after discussions with India’s Department of Atomic Energy.
Basically, the uranium trade between the two countries was suspended for the last 6-7 years and the uranium supply agreement was being negotiated. In January 2009, Kazatomprom had signed an agreement with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NCPL) to supply 2,100 tonnes of uranium to India. In July 2015, a new agreement was signed for the supply of 5,000 tonnes of uranium for the next four years, but the agreement had been stalled for the last 6-7 years.
Where does India get uranium from ?
At present, India imports uranium fuel mainly from countries like Russia, Uzbekistan, France, Canada, etc.
