New Delhi – In a post on X, Professor (Dr) Anand Ranganathan, the famous author and intellectual, urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider issuing Indian currency bearing the images of eminent national figures in addition to Mohandas Gandhi.

Dr Ranganathan said, ‘It is customary for Nations to feature distinguished personalities on their currency. British banknotes, for instance, depict figures such as Charles Darwin (Biology), Jane Austen, Charles Dickens (Author) and Michael Faraday (Physics). In contrast, Indian currency presently carries only the image of M. Gandhi.

Such exclusivity is difficult to comprehend. India has produced numerous luminaries, and their contributions merit recognition on national currency. Names that deserve consideration include CV Raman (Scientist), Ramdhari Singh Dinkar (Poet), Srinivasa Ramanujan (Mathematician), Jagadish Chandra Bose (Scientist), Swami Vivekananda and Dr APJ Abdul Kalam (Scientist).

(This is not only Dr Ranganathan’s demand, but one that resonates with every patriotic Indian. – Editor)
