Action taken against 25 Police personnel in one year

Mumbai – Several shocking cases have come to light regarding Police involvement in drug trafficking in Maharashtra. The matter is so serious that in the past year, the services of 15 Police personnel found involved in drug trafficking have been permanently terminated, while 10 others have been suspended. This information was provided in the Legislative Assembly by Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam. He further stated that if direct links with drug trafficking are established, the concerned Police personnel will face dismissal from service.

In Ahilyanagar, a case was exposed where Police personnel themselves were allegedly selling seized narcotics. Congress MLA Hemant Ogale informed the House that drugs worth ₹2.5 crore had been sold by Police officials. Varun Sardesai, MLA from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction, had raised a starred question in the Assembly regarding action against drug trafficking in Mumbai.

Police actively working to curb drug trafficking: Devendra Fadnavis

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that if narcotics are found in courier consignments, the courier company concerned will be held accountable. Authorities are investigating the entire supply chain, including where the accused procured the drugs and where they were distributed. Mumbai Police have even traveled abroad to arrest accused individuals. He described curbing drug trafficking as a major challenge and announced that offenders would be charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), which allows for the seizure of the accused’s property. He emphasized that the Police are taking proactive measures to prevent drug trafficking.

Alarming scale of drug trafficking in Maharashtra 15,408 arrested in 2025 for trafficking and consumption

Mumbai – The situation regarding drug trafficking and consumption in Maharashtra has become extremely alarming and concerning. In 2025, cases were registered against 15,408 individuals in the state — 1,454 involved in trafficking and 13,954 involved in drug consumption. On average, 1,162 individuals were arrested each month for drug consumption. These figures were revealed in a written reply submitted by the Home Department in response to a star question in the Legislative Assembly on 24 February.

According to the data, drugs worth ₹1,340.41 crore were seized in the state in 2025. A total of 3,659 individuals were arrested for transporting drugs, and 5,307 accused were taken into custody in related cases. Interestingly, out of the 13,954 individuals against whom cases were registered for drug consumption, 3,268 are still absconding.

Mumbai, the drug hub of the state; 93 cases in 42 Days

Mumbai appears to have become the hub of drug activity in Maharashtra. Between 1 January and 11 February 2026 — a span of 42 days — 93 cases of drug trafficking were registered in Mumbai, and 112 individuals were arrested. Drugs worth ₹7.93 crore were seized during this period.
