Uproar in the Kerala Legislative Assembly over the Sabarimala temple gold theft case !

Opposition announces it will not cooperate in running the House !

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The Kerala Legislative Assembly witnessed intense disruption on February 23th over the issue of missing gold from the Sabarimala Temple and the arrest of priest Kandararu Rajeevaru. As soon as proceedings began, the ruling Left Democratic Front and the opposition United Democratic Front came face to face. The Congress-led United Democratic Front made it clear that it would not cooperate in the conduct of House business in protest against the government’s stand.

1. As Question Hour commenced, UDF members raised objections before the Speaker. Slogans were raised and placards displayed demanding the resignation of Devaswom Minister V. N. Vasavan. Opposition members also staged a sit-in in front of the Speaker’s dais.

2. In the absence of Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan, senior MLA K. Babu launched a sharp attack on the government. He alleged that priest Rajeevaru was arrested without concrete evidence and kept in jail for 40 days. He claimed the action was taken because the priest did not support the government’s position on the issue of women’s entry into Sabarimala. He also alleged irregularities in the Global Ayyappa Sangamam event.

3. Law Minister P. Rajeev and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. B. Rajesh rejected the opposition’s allegations. Rajeev stated that the investigation is being conducted by a Special Investigation Team under the supervision of the High Court, and that its report is being submitted to the court in a sealed cover. He clarified that the government has no interference in the probe.
