Parents should speak to their children at home in their mother tongue

Agartala (Tripura) – Children develop a closer bond with their culture, traditions, and history when they communicate in their mother tongue at home. To ensure that children retain a proper grasp of their native language, parents must use it in daily household conversations. If children do not converse in their mother tongue at home, they risk becoming disconnected from their linguistic and cultural roots, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said at the Rajbhasha Conference.

Home Minister Shah further emphasised that politicising the use of language and script should be avoided. Language is a primary tool for children’s thinking, self-esteem, and cultural identity, and therefore, the mother tongue must be preserved. The government is focusing on primary education in children’s mother tongues, which will help sustain both the language and cultural traditions.
