“Tell the police not to intervene for five minutes; we’ll tear the Hindus apart” : Muslims threaten

  • Violence by Muslims after Hindus took out a musical wedding procession past a mosque in Nepal

  • 8 injured, including 2 police personnel

  • 18 Muslims arrested

Kathmandu (Nepal) – In the Gaur municipality area of Rautahat district, near the Indian border in Madhesh Province of Nepal, Muslims attacked Hindus after a musical wedding procession passed in front of a mosque. Stone-pelting and arson took place during the violence. Eight people, including two police personnel, were injured. In videos of the incident that have gone viral, Muslims can be heard threatening, “Move the police aside for five minutes and we will tear Hindus apart.” Considering the gravity of the situation, the administration has imposed an indefinite curfew. Despite this, tension continues in the inner areas of Gaur, and incidents of arson have not completely stopped.

Background of the violence

On the evening of 19 February, prayers for Ramzan were underway at a mosque in Sangada village of Gaur Municipality-6. At the same time, a wedding procession with musical instruments was passing in front of the mosque. Muslims objected to the playing of music and stopped the procession. This led to clashes between the two sides. During the incident, a vehicle was set on fire. To prevent further deterioration of the situation, the administration deployed hundreds of police personnel.

Stone-pelting resumed despite the compromise

Although tension prevailed throughout 20 February, a six-point compromise was reached between both sides in the evening. However, at 9 am on 21 February, Muslims again began stone-pelting. Its impact was also seen in wards 4, 5 and 6 of Gaur. To bring the situation under control, police fired in the air and used tear gas shells. Eventually, the administration had to impose a curfew.

Army deployed, yet tension persists

Muslims set several vehicles on fire and vandalised houses. According to police, six motorcycles and two jeeps were burnt. A two-wheeler was also set ablaze at Machkutia Tole in Gaur Municipality-4. After the curfew was imposed, Nepal Police and the Nepali Army were deployed. While the main road area is relatively calm, tension still prevails in the inner localities. So far, police have arrested 18 Muslims in connection with the case.

Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal stated that the curfew is effective from Mudbalwa Gate in the east, Lalbakaiya embankment in the west, Bam canal in the north and up to the Gaur customs office in the south.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Even though Hindus constitute 81 per cent of the population in Nepal and Muslims only 5 per cent, they dare to threaten to tear Hindus apart – this is shameful for Hindus !
  • What is happening in India is now happening in Nepal as well. Time and again, it has been proven that Hindus across the world are timid. If Hindus do not come out of this mindset, their very existence may be wiped out in the coming years – and that should not be surprising !
  • In India, incidents frequently occur where Muslims attack when music is played in front of mosques during namaz. Therefore, in India too, the police must remain alert and take action in such situations.
