Background of the violence
On the evening of 19 February, prayers for Ramzan were underway at a mosque in Sangada village of Gaur Municipality-6. At the same time, a wedding procession with musical instruments was passing in front of the mosque. Muslims objected to the playing of music and stopped the procession. This led to clashes between the two sides. During the incident, a vehicle was set on fire. To prevent further deterioration of the situation, the administration deployed hundreds of police personnel.
Stone-pelting resumed despite the compromise
Although tension prevailed throughout 20 February, a six-point compromise was reached between both sides in the evening. However, at 9 am on 21 February, Muslims again began stone-pelting. Its impact was also seen in wards 4, 5 and 6 of Gaur. To bring the situation under control, police fired in the air and used tear gas shells. Eventually, the administration had to impose a curfew.
Army deployed, yet tension persists
Muslims set several vehicles on fire and vandalised houses. According to police, six motorcycles and two jeeps were burnt. A two-wheeler was also set ablaze at Machkutia Tole in Gaur Municipality-4. After the curfew was imposed, Nepal Police and the Nepali Army were deployed. While the main road area is relatively calm, tension still prevails in the inner localities. So far, police have arrested 18 Muslims in connection with the case.
Chief District Officer Dinesh Sagar Bhusal stated that the curfew is effective from Mudbalwa Gate in the east, Lalbakaiya embankment in the west, Bam canal in the north and up to the Gaur customs office in the south.
