14 Former captains worldwide, including Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, write to Pakistan Government seeking fair treatment for Imran Khan

New Delhi – Former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, along with 14 former captains from across the cricketing world, have written to the Pakistan government urging that former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup–winning captain Imran Khan be treated fairly in prison. Among the signatories are Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, David Gower, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Stephen Waugh, and John Wright. The letter highlights Imran Khan’s contributions to cricket and an appeal to the authorities to ensure appropriate treatment.

Recent reports have raised serious concerns about Imran Khan’s health, with media claims that his eyesight has been deteriorating during his incarceration.

Key points from the letter

1. As former national captains, we write with grave concern regarding the reported treatment  and poor conditions of imprisonment of Pakistan’s distinguished cricketer and a towering figure in world cricket, Imran Khan.

2. His contribution to the sport is globally recognised. As captain, he led Pakistan to a historic victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup and is regarded as one of the finest all-rounders and leaders in cricket history.

3. Beyond cricket, Imran Khan served as Prime Minister and led Pakistan during difficult times. Reports of declining health, particularly worsening eyesight while in custody, are deeply concerning.

4. As a former national leader and global sporting icon, Imran Khan deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We humbly request the Pakistan government to ensure this.

Editorial Perspective

Have India’s great cricketers forgotten that it was Imran Khan who treated cricket matches against India as a form of ‘jihad’ and spewed venom against India even while serving as Prime Minister ?
