Police in Pakistan’s Punjab made to address citizens as ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ !

Police reforms in Lahore

Lahore (Pakistan) – In all police stations, offices and checkpoints, citizens must be addressed as ‘Sir’, ‘Madam’, ‘Sahib’ or ‘Sahiba’. If any police personnel refuse to do so, they will not be permitted to have direct interaction with the public. This directive has been issued to the police by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She also warned that disrespectful behaviour, such as addressing citizens as ‘Oye’ in public places, will not be tolerated.

1. During a meeting held in Lahore regarding police reforms, Maryam Nawaz stated that the police must respect the dignity of the public. Harmful attitudes and behaviour need to change, and accountability will be ensured for this purpose.

2. Maryam Nawaz said that numerous complaints have been received regarding the intimidating conduct of police personnel. She directed officials to train police staff in proper communication and to prepare them mentally as well. Police personnel who patrol or deal directly with the public must also pay attention to their body language.

3. The Chief Minister has also directed that police personnel wear body cameras. Within the next two months, all personnel of the Punjab Police and the Traffic Police will be equipped with body cameras.
