Bangladesh Nationalist Party registers a major victory

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has secured a decisive victory in the country’s general parliamentary elections. The BNP and its alliance partners have won 208 seats. The Jamaat-e-Islami has won 69 seats so far; notably, its chief Shafiqur Rahman was defeated. This outcome clearly indicates that Bangladeshi voters have rejected Jamaat; even though the party played a role in last year’s political upheaval. The results also suggest that many supporters of Sheikh Hasina voted for the BNP.

Tarique Rahman contested from two constituencies and won both. For many years, Bangladesh has seen women; Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina; serve as prime minister. After 35 years, the country is set to have a male prime minister again, with Tarique Rahman likely to take office. He is expected to be sworn in on February 14th.

What lies ahead for India–Bangladesh relations ?
When India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Dhaka in December 2025 for the last rites of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, he met Tarique Rahman. Adopting a centrist tone, Tarique announced a pragmatic friendship with India. However, his request that India hand over Sheikh Hasina; whom he has termed a criminal; could pose challenges for New Delhi.
