Ladle Mashaiq dargah committee in Karnataka files petition in SC not to permit Mahashivratri puja in dargah premises

Dargah constructed by encroaching the burial site of Hindu Saint Raghav Chaitanya

New Delhi – A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Mahashivratri puja of the Raghav Chaitanya Shivlinga at the Ladle Mashaiq dargah in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi District. The petition by the dargah committee has demanded that no new construction or alteration be made at the place, which may change the existing religious character of the place. The Supreme Court has promised to hear the matter.

What is the dispute ?

The dargah in dispute is named after the 14th century Sufi saint Hazrat Sheikh Alauddin Ansari. The dargah area is believed to be the tomb of the 15th century Hindu Saint Raghav Chaitanya. There is also a structure called Raghav Chaitanya Shivling in the area. Hindus and Muslims used to perform religious rituals at this place earlier; however, tensions increased in 2022 over the right to worship. At that time, dirt was thrown on the Shivling by fanatic Muslims. In 2025, the Karnataka High Court allowed 15 Hindus to worship the Shivling on the day of Mahashivratri.

Now a person named Siddramaiah Hiremath has filed a petition demanding that he and other devotees be allowed to worship on February 15th, i.e. on the day of Mahashivratri. In the year 2025 also, 15 people were allowed to worship on the petition of the same person.

Editorial Perspective

Most of the mosques and dargahs in India were previously religious places of Hindus. Therefore, the Union Government should conduct a survey of all such places, free them and hand them over to Hindus.
