Muslim women should remain within religious limits and avoid public programmes !

Fatwa issued by a powerful Muslim scholars’ organisation in Kerala

(‘Fatwa’ is a decree in Islam)

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) — The influential Muslim scholars’ organisation ‘Samastha Kerala Jamiat-ul-Ulama’ has issued a fatwa concerning Muslim women. In a resolution passed by the organisation, criticism was levelled at what it described as the ‘growing attraction of Muslim women towards public life’. The scholars expressed the view that this could divert women from their primary responsibilities. They claimed that traditional Islamic teachings clearly define boundaries between personal and social conduct, and that such teachings are essential for both material well-being and spiritual development. The organisation stated that Muslim women should remain within the limits prescribed by religion and should avoid public programmes.

1.The resolution further states that modesty and dignity are central values for women in Islam, and that these values guide both personal conduct and social participation.

2.The organisation clarified that Islam grants women clear rights in matters such as education, employment, inheritance and an independent spiritual identity. However, it warned that the influence of modern lifestyles and liberal ideologies could push women to cross moral boundaries. (What exactly the scholars mean by this seems clear only to them; such contradictory statements would confuse anyone ! – Editor) The scholars cautioned Muslim women against what they termed ‘distorted progressive arguments’, stating that such arguments ignore long-standing religious guidance.

Editorial Perspective

Where have those pseudo-progressives gone who keep making a hue and cry that Hindu dharma curtails women’s rights ? At such times, it seems their jaws are locked, which is why no such venom is spewed by them now !
