Case related to the video alleging Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shooting Muslims

New Delhi — As elections draw closer, a portion of the election is fought in the Supreme Court; this itself is the problem, observed Chief Justice Suryakant while hearing a petition related to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. While making this observation, the Court stated that it would fix a date for hearing the petition. The petition seeks action against Chief Minister Sarma.
1.On 8 February, the Congress claimed that a video broadcast from the Assam BJP’s ‘X’ account showed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firing shots at Muslims. The Congress alleged that the video amounted to incitement to kill minorities. The video has now been removed.
2.Petitions were filed in the Supreme Court by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India, seeking the Court’s intervention against the video. It was also brought to the Court’s notice that no case has been registered so far in this matter.
