BJP announces Ritu Tawde as its candidate for the post of Mayor of Mumbai

  • For the first time since the formation, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation gets a BJP Mayor !

  • Shiv Sena nominates Sanjay Ghaadi for the post of Deputy Mayor

Mumbai – The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced Ritu Tawde as its candidate for the post of Mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the largest civic body in the state and the wealthiest municipal corporation in the country. The announcement was made by Mumbai BJP President Amit Satam.

Simultaneously, Shiv Sena leader Rahul Shewale announced the name of Shiv Sena corporator Sanjay Shankar Ghaadi as the alliance candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor. The Mayor’s post is reserved for the General Women category, and the election will be held on February 11th.

The Thackeray faction is expected to hold a meeting to decide whether it will field a candidate for the mayoral election. Both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be elected for a term of 2.5 years. As the BJP–Shiv Sena alliance commands a clear majority in the civic body, it is almost certain that their candidates will be elected unopposed or with comfortable margins.

Ritu Tawde hails from Ghatkopar and is a senior BJP corporator. She won from Ward No. 132 and has been elected twice earlier. She has previously served as Chairperson of the BMC Education Committee. Speaking to the media after her candidature was announced, Tawde said, “Although my name has been announced as the mayoral candidate, I will work as a servant of Mumbai. Keeping in mind the constitutional importance of the House, I expect everyone to rise above party differences and work with honesty and transparency in the interest of Mumbai.”

Sanjay Ghaadi began his political journey in 1988 as a division head of the Shiv Sena–affiliated Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena. He served as a Shiv Sena corporator from 2017 to 2022 and has now been elected for a 2nd consecutive term.
