India’s first LNG-powered train to run soon !

Once the fuel tank is fully filled, it can travel up to 2,200 km

(LNG means Liquefied Natural Gas)

India’s first train powered using LNG technology!

Karnavati (Gujarat) – India’s first train powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has reached Karnavati and will soon be inducted into public service. Trial runs are currently being conducted between the Mehsana and Sabarmati stations in the state. A major advantage of the LNG train is that it causes extremely low pollution. At the same time, its operating cost is more than three times lower compared to diesel. Once the LNG tank is fully filled, the train is capable of travelling a distance of 2,200 kilometres.

1. In the coming period, another 8 to 10 trains in the Gujarat region will be operated using LNG technology.

2. Under this project, locomotives with an approximate capacity of 1,400 horsepower have been converted to the LNG fuel system.

3. Karnavati Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash stated that an LNG-powered train is cheaper than diesel. This natural fuel also leads to a significant reduction in pollution. Harmful elements such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter are generated in much lower quantities. As a result, the air around railway tracks also remains cleaner.

India becomes the world’s sixth country !

India has become the sixth country in the world to operate trains on LNG. Earlier, the United States (2017), Russia (2019), China (2020), Canada (2021) and Spain (2023) had developed this technology and operated such trains.
