Islamabad (Pakistan) – It has come to light that Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and convicted terrorist Hafiz Saeed is roaming openly in Pakistan. The Pakistan government’s claim that Saeed is either imprisoned or under house arrest has been exposed as false due to a video that has surfaced. In this video, which emerged from Pakistan’s Punjab province, Hafiz Saeed is seen attending meetings and warmly greeting commanders of his organisation. That a terrorist designated by the United Nations and absconding in several cases in India is moving freely in Pakistan has raised serious questions about Pakistan’s claims of combating terrorism.

Claim of being active in Punjab

The news channel “OSINT TV” released the video and claimed that Saeed was present in Okara, Punjab, during October and November of last year. Among the terrorists he met were Lashkar-e-Taiba deputy chief Saifullah Kasuri and recruitment commander Nasr Javed. Interestingly, the video also shows Saeed receiving security from individuals in Police uniforms.

Government claims of conviction in multiple cases

According to the Pakistan government, Hafiz Saeed has been imprisoned since 2019. He has reportedly been sentenced to more than 50 years in prison in various terrorism-related cases. Pakistan has repeatedly told the world and the United Nations that Saeed is lodged in a prison in Punjab. While the United Nations and the international community believe Saeed to be incarcerated, videos surfacing repeatedly in recent times show him moving about freely.

Political activities despite being ‘Imprisoned’

Officially, Hafiz Saeed is said to be confined in Kot Lakhpat Central Jail in Lahore; however, he is accused not only of carrying out terrorist activities but also of running a political party. He had formed a political party and even contested the 2018 general elections in Pakistan. At present, his party remains active, and members of his family are actively participating in elections.

Mastermind of the Mumbai attacks

Hafiz Saeed is on India’s list of most-wanted terrorists. He is the main mastermind behind the Mumbai attacks and has been involved in several other terrorist operations, including the Pulwama attack. India has repeatedly demanded Saeed’s extradition from Pakistan, but Pakistan has rejected the request every single time.

Editorial Perspective

Will the United Nations now take action against Pakistan? Will it declare Pakistan a terrorist state, or will it ignore this incident and continue to shield Pakistan ?
