Nothing Wrong with the Ban on Non-Hindus in Char Dham – Shadab Shams, President, Uttarakhand Waqf Board

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) – The basic purpose of going to any religious place is faith and devotion. No purpose is going to be served by going to a place where one has no faith and it doesn’t send positive message to the people. In fact, it can trigger unwanted conflict in such matters; therefore, it is proper if ban is imposed on entry to religious places associated with Sanatan Dharma, stated Uttarakhand Waqf Board’s President Shadab Shams while speaking on the issue of ban on non-Hindus in Char Dham Yatra. His statement is considered to be of significance in the background of opposition started against Badrinath-Kedarnath Samiti’s proposal to ban non-Hindus entry in Char Dham.

Any untoward incident during the yatra can spoil environment in the country

Shams further warned that presently, there are conspiracies continuously hatched against the country. The conspirators would never like if the event like Char Dham Yatra is held peacefully and at such large scale. Non-Hindus will be blamed if any untoward incident happens during the yatra, affecting communal harmony. (Editorial perspective : If non-Hindus are involved in such acts, why shouldn’t they be blamed ?)

Peace and harmony is necessary in the country

Shams further added that ban on non-Hindus’ entry is not against any community; but it is necessary to maintain peace and harmony in the country. Decisions should be taken considering maintenance of communal balance in the country and should not be taken at an emotional level.

What is the proposal

1. Ban on non-Hindus entry in 50 temples including Char Dham

Ban may soon be imposed on the entry of non-Hindus in about 50 temples under the aegis of temple committee, including Char Dham Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri in Uttarakhand. The Government and the temple committees have agreed on this view.

2. Exemption to Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists

This ban will not be applicable to followers  of sects like Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. The temple committees are of the view that these sects are considered to be connected to the branches of Hindu traditions.

3. Agreement in Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Mandir committee unanimously decided to ban on the entry of non-Hindus in the temple and at Ganga-ghat. Committee secretary, Mr Suresh Semwal informed that the ban won’t be applicable to Sikhs. The decision will be implemented soon.
