Senior U.S. Senator Warner and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Washington DC (USA) – Senior US Senator Warner has urged the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to intervene in cases of human rights violations in Pakistan. He pointed out that attacks on political leaders, journalists and social activists in Pakistan have increased. He also stated that Pakistani citizens living abroad are being intimidated.

Questions over elections !

Senator Warner referred to Pakistan’s general election held in 2024. The election had been postponed since 2023. During the election period, incidents of violence were reported, along with allegations of interference and irregularities. These developments were noted by the United States, international organisations and civil society in Pakistan. During the election period, unwarranted restrictions were imposed on freedom of expression, freedom of association and peaceful protests.

Action against PTI supporters !

Warner also expressed concern over the actions taken after the elections. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party won the highest number of seats but failed to secure a majority. Thereafter, a large number of the party’s supporters and leaders were arrested. Mass arrests took place both before and after the elections. He called for a thorough investigation into such actions, including those targeting people living in the United States, and demanded action against those responsible. He further appealed that the United States and its international partners should jointly investigate these allegations.
