
Kolkata (Bengal) – Disruption was created at many places in Saraswati-puja, an annual religious festival of Hindus, by the Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) Government led by Mamata Banerjee. On 23.01.2026, due to the internal discord within the ruling TMC, obstacles were created in Shri Saraswatidevi-pujan in Kamarhati city, in North 24 Parganas district.

Temple locked
As per the report of ‘DD News Bangla’, a faction of TMC locked the temple in Belgharia Sarbojanin Shri Shri Durga Chowk Society; therefore, the local Hindu women could not perform Shri Saraswatidevi puja. TMC municipal councillor has not been able to resolve the problem so far. Local Police refused to intervene and open the lock till both the factions settled the problems with each other. One woman informed that a temple should be a place of worship for all. There should be two keys to the lock and one should be with one group and the other key should be with the other group. Another woman stated that the temple is not owned by any individual but it is for all.
Muslim leaders oppose Shri Saraswatidevi puja in Mamata Banerjee’s college
In south Kolkata, a girl student has accused a TMC leader of threatening her for organising Shri Saraswatidevi puja in the Government aided Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College. The name of the TMC leader is stated to be Daud Alam Molla. In a video made viral on the social media, the student informed the media that Daud Alam Molla was standing outside and has threatened her to harm her studying law in the college. This college is the education institute of Bengal’s Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee. In January 2025, there was news published about threats to girl students of rape and murder if they performed Shri Saraswati Devi puja.
Puja-pandal closed due to dispute among two factions
On 23.01.2026, there was a scuffle between two factions of TMC in Dinhata College in Cooch Behar district resulting in abandoning the puja-pandal of Shri Saraswatidevi. The Police were called to maintain law and order. On intimation, Dinhata Police Station’s chief and deputy zonal Police Officer reached the college. Hindu devotees gone to the pandal for Saraswati-pujan had to run away from the site for their safety and protection of property. The scenes in the college area indicated that the TMC goons had transformed the college area into a battlefield.
No permission for puja since Muslim students outnumbered Hindu students
In Barasat city in North 24 Parganas district, Hindu students were not allowed to perform Shri Saraswatidevi puja in the school premises. As per the report, more than 50% students studying in the school are Muslims; therefore, the permission was not granted for puja. In a video on social media, Police are seen preventing students from performing Shri Saraswatidevi puja. Later, the puja was performed on road footpath outside the school. It was stated by a person named Pradip Chatterjee that puja was not possible in school since Hindus are in minority. There is no difference between the situation of Hindus in Bengal and Bangladesh. Police took out the idol of Shri Saraswati devi.
Strong protest by BJP
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has strongly condemned these incidents. He has asked on the social media whether Bengal is turning into West Bangladesh now ? The incident shows how Hindus are treated when they become minority.
