“India should focus on its own minorities instead of Bangladesh” : Touhid Hossain

Anti-India statement by Bangladesh interim Government’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – “We do not make statements on actions against minorities in India. Indian authorities should also adopt the same approach. If our citizens face atrocities, we have mechanisms to address them. It would be better if India focuses on its own minorities. We will take care of our own matters,” said Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Adviser in the interim Government of Bangladesh.

No evidence of failure to ensure Indians’ security

In an interview with the BBC, Touhid Hossain objected to India’s decision to recall family members of diplomatic officials from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. He stated that India had recently called back the families of its diplomatic staff from Bangladesh. “There is no evidence that we have failed to ensure the safety of Indian citizens. Therefore, we do not find India’s decision justified,” he said.

“What have we done that relations with India have deteriorated ?”

When asked whether India–Bangladesh relations were currently at their lowest point, Hossain said, “I am not sure about that; however, relations between Bangladesh and India are important for both countries, and steps must be taken by both sides to improve them. No step has been taken from our side to downgrade relations with India. Ask my counterparts in Delhi whether we have taken any harsh action against them. What exactly have we done that relations with India have worsened?” (This is what is called the thief crying louder than the victim. – Editor)

Referring to Sheikh Hasina, Hossain said that while she was in India, they had expected her to avoid making statements inconsistent with the present situation in Bangladesh; however, that did not happen.

Desire to maintain good relations with Pakistan

Speaking about relations between Islamabad and Dhaka, Touhid Hossain said that ties with Pakistan had been deliberately strained during the previous regime under Sheikh Hasina. He stated that there were some issues with Pakistan and discussions on them were ongoing. At the same time, efforts were being made to establish normal relations. “What is wrong in wishing to maintain good relations with any country?” he asked. As a neighbouring country, Bangladesh wants normal relations with Pakistan. Like other nations, Bangladesh seeks good relations with all countries, he added.

Editorial Perspective

Bangladesh displays the mentality of ‘the thief accusing others first.’ In India, along with Indian Muslims, Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators too are living safely and are even obtaining citizenship documents due to corruption. In contrast, minority Hindus who are citizens of Bangladesh are facing atrocities in Bangladesh and the world is witnessing this. Raising one’s voice against this is India’s right.
