The DMK government in Tamil Nadu denied permission for the Kerala Kumbh Mela chariot procession

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) – The Tamil Nadu government has refused permission for the chariot procession associated with the Kumbh Mela – Mahamagha festival, which was to be held in Malappuram, Kerala. The procession was scheduled to begin from the Thirumoorthy hills near Udumalpet, from where the Bharathapuzha river originates.

1. The organizers stated that the police in Udumalpet stopped the chariot procession and said that senior government officials in Chennai had denied permission.

2. The organizers decided to transport the Sri Mahameru idol from the chariot to the Kerala border in a four-wheeler vehicle, and the procession was then resumed from Palakkad (Kerala). This procession is linked to the festival being held at Thirunavaya on the banks of the Bharathapuzha river.

3. The organizers had previously stated that this chariot procession, carrying the Mahameru idol, would represent a significant spiritual milestone of the festival. The journey is important for its spiritual and cultural connection to the Bharathapuzha river and as a historical link between the cultures of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It was expected to include participation from prominent Adheenams and religious institutions in Tamil Nadu.

4. The procession is being led by Acharya Dr. Srinath Karayatt of the Bharatiya Dharma Prachar Sabha, along with senior Acharyas from various spiritual traditions. The journey will conclude on January 21st in Thirunavaya, where the Mahamagha Puja will be performed as part of the festival.

5. The ‘Mahamagha Festival 2026’ was officially inaugurated by the Governor of Kerala, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, on January 19th, who also ceremonially hoisted the flag for the festival.
