Tehran (Iran) – On 8 December 2025, Iran seized a commercial vessel named MT Valiant Roar carrying Indian crew members in international waters near Dibba port, close to the United Arab Emirates. There were 16 Indian crew members on board the vessel. Iran seized the ship alleging that 6,000 tonnes of diesel were being smuggled from Iran.

In this matter, the Indian Embassy in Tehran has sought consular access from Iran for the Indian crew members. Consular access refers to the right of Embassy or High Commission officials to have direct contact with detained Indian citizens. Such a request had been made earlier as well; however, it was rejected by Iran. If consular access is granted, Indian officials will be able to meet and enquire about Indians detained in foreign prisons.

The seized vessel is owned by an establishment based in the United Arab Emirates. The Indian Embassy is in contact with that establishment. The Embassy has urged the concerned company to provide legal assistance to the Indian crew members in Iran. It has also requested that food and water be supplied to the Indian crew members stranded aboard the seized vessel.
