Some experts also predict that such an alliance may be impractical !

Ankara (Turkiye) – Muslim nations Turkiye, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are reportedly in discussions to form a defence alliance. This has triggered speculation on whether preparations are underway for the creation of an ‘Islamic NATO’. The idea implies that if one of these countries is attacked, it would be treated as an attack on the other two, who may then either join the war or provide military assistance to the attacked nation.

Turkiye is already a member of NATO and possesses the second-largest military in the alliance after the United States. According to a report by the American news portal Bloomberg, which has promoted the concept of an ‘Islamic NATO’, the combination could involve Saudi Arabia’s financial strength, Pakistan’s nuclear programme and manpower, and Turkiye’s experience and advanced defence industry.
A Turkish strategic think tank has stated that as the United States is prioritising its own and Israel’s interests at the regional level, countries are being compelled to develop new security arrangements in a changing conflict-driven environment.
Will this ‘Islamic NATO’ be harmful for India ?
On whether this hostile alliance could prove detrimental to India, former Indian Air Force Air Marshal Anil Chopra said that if such an alliance materialises, it could pose a serious challenge for India, Israel, Armenia and Cyprus. This development must be viewed in the context of the growing defence cooperation between India and Israel.
India is strengthening its relations with Greece and Cyprus. India and Israel may also enhance coordination in the Mediterranean region. However, according to some analysts, it will be difficult for an alliance like ‘Islamic NATO’ to actually take shape in the future. Professor Andreas Krieg of King’s College London stated that a NATO-style alliance is not practical, as it would drag Gulf countries into wars that are not necessary for their national interests.
What is the concept of ‘Islamic NATO’ ?
At present, the world has a military alliance known as NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which includes 29 countries. One of its core principles is that an attack on any one member is considered an attack on all members, who then extend military assistance to the affected country. On similar lines, Islamic countries are expressing an desire to establish an ‘Islamic NATO’ alliance.
