“Chabahar Port project with Iran remains on course !”

External Affairs Ministry rebuts Congress’ charge

New Delhi – The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly dismissed  Congress party’s claim that India has relinquished control over Iran’s Chabahar Port. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that all plans related to the Chabahar Port are continuing, and that India is in dialogue with the United States to ensure the smooth progress of the project.

The Congress had alleged that

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acting under pressure from US President Donald Trump, surrendered India’s control over the strategic port. It further claimed that public funds amounting to ₹1,100 crore invested in the project have been squandered.

US extends exemption for India

The US government had withdrawn the exemption granted in 2018 for the Chabahar Port on 29 September last year. However, despite sanctions on Iran, India had been permitted to continue operations at the port, with the exemption valid until 27 October 2025. Before the expiry of this period, the US once again extended the exemption by six months. Consequently, the exemption will now remain in force until 26 April 2026.

The United States has imposed restrictions on Iran’s Chabahar Port with the objective of intensifying economic and political pressure on Tehran. US maintains that Iran utilises revenues from ports, oil trade, and international projects to finance its nuclear programme, missile development, and to increase its influence in West Asia.
