New Delhi – In the last 20 days, two judges have met with accidents due to stray dogs on highways. One of the judges is in critical condition. “What is the need for stray dogs in schools, hospitals and court premises and what can be the objection to their removal ?” the apex court asked during the hearing on the stray dog case. The case began with the Supreme Court proceedings on July 28, 2025. At that time, an article was published in Delhi on rabies disease caused by the bite of stray dogs. The case has been heard 5 times so far.
1. During the hearing, advocate C.U. Singh argued. He said that Delhi is also threatened by rats and monkeys. If dogs are suddenly removed, the rat population will increase. They are disease carriers. Dogs maintain balance.
2. On this, the court said, “What kind of relationship is this? Dogs and cats are enemies. So we should encourage more cats. We have not ordered every dog to be removed from the street. They should be treated according to the rules.
3. Advocate Singh said the dogs should be sterilised and released back into the same area.
4. The court said that the concern here is the number of dogs. How many dogs do you think there should be near each bed in every hospital ?
5. Advocate Singh said that a pet dog has an owner. A stray dog has no owner; But it is not the responsibility of the state. The job of the state is to provide vaccination etc. We don’t suggest eliminating dogs; but the law should be understood from its proper perspective. We’re not talking about keeping dogs in shelters permanently. We don’t know who the dog likes and who doesn’t.
