Pandharpur, Maharashtra – The idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukminimata here will once again undergo vajralep (a protective coating), for which approval has been granted by the Law and Judiciary Department. The date for carrying out the vajralep will be decided in a meeting of the Shri Vitthal–Rukmini Temple Committee.
In this regard, the Executive Officer of the Temple Committee, Rajendra Shelke, stated,
“There has been some wear at the feet of the idols. Therefore, it is essential to carry out a conservation process to preserve the idols. With the approval of the Temple Committee, this proposal was sent to the Law and Judiciary Department, and permission has now been granted. The vajralep will be carried out soon.”
The vajralep applied to the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini in 2020 had come off within a short period
On July 23 and 24, 2020, a ‘silicone’ coating was applied to the feet of the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukminimata; however, it began to wear off within a short time. So far, the Archaeology Department has applied various types of chemical coatings to both idols on four occasions. Each time, it is claimed that “there will be no need to apply vajralep again,” but the hollowness of these claims repeatedly becomes evident, as the process has to be carried out again after a certain period.
