Beijing (China) – China has stated that the Kashmir issue should be resolved within the framework of bilateral agreements. The reference to Kashmir appears in the joint statement issued after the seventh round of strategic talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar; however, China has not taken any position in favour of Pakistan.
The joint statement notes that Pakistan briefed China on the latest developments related to Jammu and Kashmir. In response, China reiterated its long-standing position that the Jammu and Kashmir issue is a matter with a historical background.
It further states that the issue should be resolved peacefully in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, and on the basis of bilateral agreements. Both sides also emphasised cooperation on cross-border water resources on the principles of equality and mutual benefit, and underlined the importance of adhering to international legal obligations.
Silence on the Indus Waters Treaty !
Both sides acknowledged the importance of international and regional security; however, the joint statement makes no mention of India’s decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. India had taken this decision after the attack in Pahalgam. Overall, China adopted a balanced stance and advised Pakistan to seek a resolution to the Kashmir issue through bilateral means.
