“It was just a joke,” claim the accused

Paris (France) – A court here has found ten individuals guilty of making obscene remarks against Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron. Brigitte Macron had filed a complaint of online harassment in 2024. In this case, the convicted individuals have been sentenced to eight months of imprisonment and fined ₹63,000.

These individuals had been spreading false rumors on social media claiming that Brigitte Macron was born a man. They also linked the matter to “pedophilia” on the grounds that Brigitte is 24 years older than her husband Emmanuel—pedophilia meaning sexual attraction towards minors. Action was taken due to these obscene and defamatory remarks.

Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron were married in 2007, and their current ages are 48 and 72 respectively. Brigitte’s daughter from her previous marriage, Tiphaine Auzière, testified that these rumors had a severe impact on her mother’s health and on the entire family. One of the convicted persons stated that it was merely a joke, questioning whether permission is required in France to make jokes.
