Indore (Madhya Pradesh) : 14 dead so far due to contaminated water

  • 162 people hospitalised

  • 2 officials suspended

  • Water contaminated after sewage mixed due to leakage in the water pipeline

Indore (Madhya Pradesh) – Information has emerged that 14 people have died so far after consuming contaminated water in the Bhagirathpura area of the city. At present, 162 people affected due to the contaminated water are undergoing treatment in hospitals. On 31 December, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav visited Indore and met the affected patients in various hospitals.

He later held a meeting with officials. During the meeting, the Chief Minister said,

“Such a distressing situation must never arise again. All of you should carry out comprehensive planning for this. Once the report regarding contaminated water is received, strict action will be taken against those found guilty.”

The water became contaminated after sewage mixed into the water supply pipeline due to leakage. This contaminated water led to the deaths. So far, 2 officials have been suspended in this matter.

Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya’s insensitivity

After attending the meeting with the Chief Minister, Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya came out, where journalists asked him questions. When asked about the relatives of hospitalised patients not receiving reimbursement for treatment expenses, Vijayvargiya replied, “Oh, leave it yaar… don’t ask pointless questions.” Journalists responded that this was not a pointless question and that they had personally visited the affected area. Reacting angrily, Minister Vijayvargiya used abusive language. Some time later, he expressed regret through a post on ‘X’.

Congress demands Vijayvargiya’s resignation

Congress state president Jitu Patwari addressed the Chief Minister on ‘X’, saying, “Chief Minister Yadavji, what kind of spectacle is your government and your ministers creating ? The victims are neither receiving free treatment nor even sympathy, and on top of that, your arrogant minister is using abusive language. If even a shred of shame remains, then on moral grounds, you should immediately take the resignation of such an insolent minister.”

Madhya Pradesh High Court seeks status report from the state government

In the case of deaths caused by contaminated water in Bhagirathpura, two public interest litigations have been filed in the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. One has been filed by Indore High Court Bar Association president Ritesh Insani, and the other by Bhagirathpura resident Rahul Gaikwad. After hearing the matter, the court has directed the state government to submit a detailed report on the entire case on 2 January.
