More than 200 attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district in recent days

New Delhi – Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district has currently become unsafe for minority Hindus. Shocking information has emerged that more than 200 attacks have taken place here within just a few days. A few days ago, a Hindu youth named Dipu Chandra Das was brutally murdered here. Dipu Chandra Das had been taken into police custody; however, a mob dragged him out of police control and killed him. This incident exposed the collapse of law and order in Bangladesh. The repercussions of this incident were felt across the world. In this area, which was once Hindu-majority, the very existence of Hindus has now come under threat.

Hindu population declines from 78% to 9%

Around the year 1937, the Hindu population in Mymensingh was as high as 78 percent; today, this figure has fallen to just 9 percent. From this district, located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, Hindus were systematically driven out. Out of the district’s population of over 5.1 million, nearly 90 percent are now Muslim. So far in 2025, there have been 10 major attacks on temples and Hindus here, while in August 2024 alone, violent incidents occurred at 183 locations in a single month.

Defenseless Hindus

Mymensingh is home to Bangladesh’s largest Shri Durga Temple (Durgabari) as well as the temple of Ramakrushna Paramahamsa. Historically, this place has been considered a stronghold of Hindus. After liberation from Pakistan in 1971, Hindus had significant strength here; but now the same Hindu community is being treated as outsiders. Due to administrative neglect and the helplessness of the Police, an atmosphere of fear prevails among the remaining Hindu families in the area.

Editorial Perspective

If there have been so many attacks on Hindus in just one district of Bangladesh, it is better not to even imagine what the condition of Hindus across the entire country must be like ! The truth is that Hindus there now seem to have no one left to protect them.
