“Centre will soon remove M Gandhi’s image from currency notes,” says John Brittas, CPI(M) RS Member

New Delhi – CPI(M) leader and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas made public his fear of Mahatma Gandhi’s image disappearing from India’s official currency. Brittas made a shocking revelation that a plan was underway to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s image from Indian rupees and that one or two symbols of Arsha Bharat culture are being considered to replace the Gandhi image.

The claim comes days after Parliament passed controversial legislation replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with a new rural employment law that drops the leader’s name. The first round of discussions has already happened at a high level. This is no longer mere speculation,” Brittas told reporters in New Delhi. “Removing Gandhi from our currency is part of a larger attempt to rewrite the symbols of the nation.”

The Reserve Bank of India refutes claims

In an official statement the Reserve Bank of India has clearly said, ‘There is no proposal of replacing Gandhiji’s image on the currency with that of any other personality’.

Editorial Perspective

The government should conduct an inquiry into what was the basis for Brittas’ statement and if it is proved that he has tried to spread rumours he should be imprisoned.
