Mumbai – Citing concerns over rising cases related to ‘Love Jihad’ in Maharashtra, more than 160 Hindu organizations across 20 districts have jointly urged the state government to introduce a stringent ‘Anti-Love Jihad Act’ during the ongoing winter session. According to a press release issued by Mr Sunil Ghanwat, State Coordinator of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, over 1,600 members associated with these groups participated in demonstrations calling for the immediate enactment of a legislation modeled on laws already implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, ensuring the safety of young girls and women.

The press release states,
1. Thousands of women and Hindutva devotees gathered in 20 districts including Jalgaon, Dhule, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Ahilyanagar, Akola, Amravati, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Satara, Pune, Solapur, Nashik, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and submitted representations to the local district and taluka administrations as well as local public representatives.
2. Representatives of Hindutva organisations have mentioned various incidents of Hindu girls falling victim to love jihad in their representations to the Governor, Chief Minister and Home Department.

3. The gang rape of 7th standard girls in Nagar, the sexual assault of a 6-year-old minor girl in Ichalkaranji, the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Shahuwadi, Kolhapur, and the murders of Shraddha Walkar, Rupali Chandanshive and Tanushree Sharma, highlight the fact that ‘love jihad’ is not an individual crime but an organized conspiracy.
4. In Maharashtra too, there is a demand placed before the government that the Anti-Love Jihad Act on the lines of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, should include a provision for life imprisonment in the law, that the crimes be declared cognizable and non-bailable, that any citizen, including the victims, should have the right to file a complaint, that a special police branch and a ‘Ranragini’ team should be established, that funds coming from abroad, jihadi machinery and trafficking should be thoroughly investigated and strict action should be taken against those who extend help to Love Jihad, a helpline number should be circulated for quick complaints.
