Funicular railway at Shri Malang Garh operated even before official inauguration

Reportedly, a Muslim religious leader with political backing started it for personal use

Thane (Maharashtra) – In a shocking incident that occurred recently, the funicular railway at Shri Malang Garh was operated on December 5 (Friday) by a Muslim religious leader for his private purpose without authorisation, despite the pending construction work. This incident has caused public outrage and brought embarrassment upon the Public Works Department and the administration.

1. The funicular railway at Shri Malang Garh in Thane District — praised as the longest in Asia — was yet to be officially inaugurated.

2. Before the inauguration, the railway coaches were reportedly decorated with garlands and flowers and used by a Muslim leader to transport relatives attending a wedding at his home. Related news and multiple videos surfaced publicly.

3. For a public transport system of this nature, technical inspection, safety certification, emergency management preparation, and operational approval are mandatory. Despite the funicular railway not yet receiving final safety clearance, technical sanction, or approval for operation, it was still operated.

What is a Funicular Railway?

A funicular is a railway system used in hilly or sloped regions to transport people or goods using two cars. When one car ascends, the other descends. Cables connect both cars.

No action on the Muslim leader due to political backing

The cars were reportedly running even late into the night — until 10 PM and in darkness as well. Locals told Sanatan Prabhat that an MLA was also present at the wedding ceremony. They further alleged that the leader may have ordered the construction company to operate the railway, and due to his political influence, no objections have been raised so far.
