Adulteration in Prasad sold at Baidhanath Dham in Deoghar (Jharkhand)

Deoghar (Jharkhand) – The chura (A kind of edible in powder form) and pedha (Sweet balls from milk) offered as Prasad throughout the year are well known at Baidhyanath Dham, which is world-famous for its Shravani Mela. Samples of pedhas collected by Food Safety Department have revealed that the pedhas were adulterated to a large extent. The Department had acquired the samples of pedhas from 72 shops. When these were tested in the laboratory in Ranchi, they found that soil had been mixed in some of the samples. Food Safety Officer S. K. Singh has stated that, based on this report, notices will be issued to those involved in adulteration and action will be taken against them as per the rules.

Large traders in the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh produce low-cost ‘mawa’ (milk solids obtained by heating and reducing milk) using machines, and this is then used in the making of pedhas.

Editorial Perspective

Those adulterating Prasad should be hanged.
