More than 17 lakh deceased voters on the electoral rolls

This revealed through the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Gujarat

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) – The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Gujarat has revealed that more than 17 lakh deceased voters were still included in the existing voter list across the State, a release by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has stated.

1. In the last one month, enumeration forms have been distributed to more than five crore voters registered in the 2025 electoral roll. In most of the 33 districts, 100 per cent of the distribution has been completed. Work on digitising the returned forms is currently underway.

2. More than 6.14 lakh voters of Gujarat, were found absent from their addresses. It has been noticed that more than 30 lakh voters have permanently migrated from the state. BLOs (Booth level officers) found more than 3.25 lakh voters in the “repeated” category, which means that their names figured at more than one place, the release stated.

More than 50% of the deceased on the voter list are Hindus – Chief Minister of Bengal playing politics of religion

Bengal Chief Minister, who has continuously opposed the SIR, targeted the BJP saying that in Gujarat more than 50% of the deceased voters found on the electoral roles are Hindus. BJP is playing the religion card before the 2026 election. They are cutting the very branch on which they are perched. Will not allow detention centres in Bengal – Mamata Banerjee

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee holds the centre responsible for border security. Similarly, she also says that not filling the SIR form is an expression of unity in the people. She said permission will not be given for neither conducting the SIR exercise nor the building of detention centres in Bengal. Seizing of Waqf property will not be permitted.
